Orthodontics Technologies and Techniques

During the last decade, the specialty of orthodontics has undergone a technological revolution. New materials and techniques are constantly being developed that make orthodontics treatment less noticeable. This allows for improved patient comfort, reduces orthodontic treatment time and help reduce costs. Below are a few technological advancements currently available at BIDC orthodontic dental center.

1. Direct Bracket Bonding

In the past, individual bands are wrapped around and cemented onto each individual tooth. The band served to secure orthodontic brackets attachments. While effective, it creates the “tin grin” look that some patients found unappealing. Today, the practice of direct bonding brackets onto patients’ teeth surface is possible and are much less noticeable. Brackets are also now much smaller and more effective.

At BIDC orthodontic dental center, our dentists uses brackets from 3M Unitek with APC™ PLUS adhesive coated appliance system. Each individual bracket is clearly identified and pre-oriented on a special foam liner that virtually eliminates bracket rotation in transit. There is no wasted time mixing cementation, thus treatment timings is faster. The brackets comes in a single use, easy-to-place brackets.

Each braces bracket within the APC system is pre-coated with high-quality 3M adhesive that tolerates moisture. More importantly, as the brackes are individually packaged, there is a tamper-evident lid to ensure that each brackets are totally clean, new and sterilized brackets.

2. Titanium Archwire

Another innovation in orthodontics is what is sometimes referred to as “Space Age” wires. These wires was developed through the NASA space program. They are made from resilient metals which are more flexible and retain a pre-formed shape.

The titanium material enable orthodontists to apply the wires more easily and require fewer replacements. Thus, this reduces the number of visits to your orthodontist for adjustments. The end-result often is less discomfort and shorter treatment times.

Amongst a variety of materials, BIDC orthodontic dental center also uses the 3M Unitek Nitinol archwire system. These archwire system provides the linear elasticity and bendability of high strength steel. The archwire is thermally heat activate for super-elasticity. To date, only nickel titanium delivers the elastic working range that makes it easy to engage and deliver the light continuous forces that effectively move teeth.

3. Self-Ligating Braces

Passive self-ligating braces such as the Damon system and Clarity SL Braces eliminates the need for elastic or metal “ties”. With self-ligating braces, orthodontics treatment require less tightening. The light high technology shape-memory wires move teeth faster and require fewer adjustments. Self-ligating braces are sometimes known as speed braces.

Self-ligating braces have brackets that uses a slide mechanism to hold the wire. This allows teeth to move more freely, quickly and comfortably. There are no o-rings involved. Traditional braces that are tied in with elastics that causes friction and pressure, therefore it makes treatment slower and less comfortable as compared to the new self-ligating typed braces.

4. Clear Brackets & Lingual Braces or Invisible Braces

Brackets are now less visible with clear brackets or tooth-colored brackets such as clear braces with Clarity braces and Clarity SL braces. These aesthetically appealing braces are translucent white to blend with the teeth. They may also be in a clear and transparent material that allows the natural color of teeth to show through. Because the brackets are not as noticeable, these clear brackets boosts the patient’s self-esteem and help eliminate the self-consciousness that may be associated with wearing metal braces.

For those patients who want complete “obscurity,” lingual braces is another alternative orthodontics option. Lingual braces are applied to the inside surfaces of the teeth. Many people (especially professionals such as lawyers, doctors and sales representatives) opt for these “hidden” braces. Discuss your various options with your orthodontists.

5. Removable Clear Aligners or Clear Braces

Orthodontics treatment is more comfortable with removable clear aligners such as invisalign orthodontic treatment. These clear plastic trays are non-visible and may be taken off when required. Therefore, it makes oral hygiene and teeth cleaning easier.

Patients are able to eat any foods they enjoy. Clear aligners are comfortable. Other advantages include the freedom for patients to do sports and blow instruments that fixed brackets would otherwise hinder activities.

6. Colorful Orthodontic Bands and Retainers

Elastics or the small rubber orthodontic bands used with fixed orthodontics on metal braces or clear braces, comes in colors from neons to pastels. Individuals who wear fixed braces can change their elastics o-rings to coordinate with their outfits. They can be also be creative and change the color of their bands for festivities and holidays.

Retainers worn after the braces treatment is completed, can also be personalized and made with colors other than the traditional roof-of-the-mouth pink. New orthodontic materials makes treatment more colorful and enables patients to customize their orthodontic accessories to their own styles.
