Straumann Implants

Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, the Straumann Group is one of world’s most established  dental implants designed for long-lasting and esthetic tooth replacement solutions. Its innovative dental treatment options is used to replace individual teeth, to carry on multi-unit bridges and to attach fixed or removable full dentures.

Straumann’s roughen dental implants have shown advantages over smooth surfaces in terms of better osseointegration, enhanced bone-to-implant contact as well as better biomechanical and functional stability. There are various range of struamann implants that include:

  1. Straumann SLA : long-term established ADA approved titanium implant system
  2. Straumann SLActive : special active surface for quicker osseointegration
  3. Strauamnn SLA Bone Level : stronger small size titanium implant post
  4. Strauamnn SLActive Bone Level : bone level with active surface
  5. Straumann SLA Roxolid : patented titanium and ceramic implant body
  6. Straumann SLActive Roxolid : roxolid implant body with active surface
  7. Straumann BLX :  superior properities design for immediacy
  8. Straumann PURE ceramic implants : a metal-free ceramic bone level implant system with ZLA surface

Straumann SLA

In 1994, ITI Struamann developed the ground-breaking SLA surface that reduced the average healing time from 12 weeks (TPS surface) to only 6-8 weeks. Shortly after its introduction, the macro- and microstructured, osseoconductive SLA surface became the gold standard in implant technology.

Benefits of SLA surface topograpy

  • Proven by clinical scientic studies
  • Hydrophilicity attracts blood to more of the surface
  • Chemical activity promotes faster osseointegration
  • one of the most documented rough surfaces in implantology
  • generates a macro-roughness on the titanium surface by using a large-grit sandblasting technique; superposes a micro-roughness by acid-etching; resulting topography offers an ideal structure for cell attachment.

Clinical Studies

An outstanding 10-year results on the SLA surface presented recently shows:

  • Unchanged survival rate: in the examined 23 patients, no implants were lost between years 5 and 10
  • No statistically significant bone loss occurred between 5 and 10 years
  • Prosthesis survival of 96 %
  • No signs of peri-implantitis were noted at 10 years
  • high patient satisfaction

Over a 10 year study, SLA implants shows no statistically significant bone loss

Straumann dental implants with an SLA endosseous surface offer a promising solution for rapid anchoring in the bone.

  • Restoration as early as after six weeks of healing with a high predictability of success is the standard treatment of today.
  • In-vitro experiments on cell cultures attest the SLA surface an osteoconductive property.
  • Removal torque experiments and histologic analyses from in-vivo studies further confi rm the fast osseointegration of the implants with the SLA surface.

Results from clinical studies are excellent. Five years after restoration, the overall implant survival rates to date are greater than 99%, as shown in a prospective multicenter study. Patients benefit from early-loaded implant restorations. They resume function quickly following surgery and provisional restoration.

Based on cells cultured on tissue culture, SLA surfaces shows the highest osteoconductive property or rapid anchoring in the bone as compared to other types of surfaces

Straumann SLActive

The SLActive surface takes the proven concept of SLA one step further to set the new surface benchmark. SLActive dental implant surfaces optimizes its molecular structure that has enabled a further reduction of the average healing time from 6-8 weeks to 3-4 weeks.

SLActive is based on the scientifically proven SLA surface topography, but exhibits a fundamentally improved surface chemistry. Due to its ideal conditioning, the chemically active and hydrophilic SLActive surface significantly promotes the initial healing reaction allowing a faster osseointegration process and higher implant stability.

Clinical Studies

SLActive is supported by more scientific studies than any other dental implant technology at the time of market launch. And the SLActive Multicenter Research indicates:

  • For patients the risks of failure is reduced by up to 60%
  • Aggressive protocols with immediate and early loading (at 4 weeks) shows excellent survival rate of 98%
  • Survival rate of 98% outperforms average survival rate in industry based on literature review on clinical studies across all other competitor implant systems
  • Results illustrates that SLActive offers more implant stability in the early critical loading period relative to conventional implant surfaces

The decreasing primary stability and increasing secondary stability result in a decrease in overall stability (dip) between week 2 and 4 after implant placement.

The faster osseointegration with SLActive leads to an earlier implant stability between week 2 and 4.

Studies carried out also indicates that with the SLActive surface, the higher surface free energy result in a chemical activation of the surface. Based on clinical studies, the SLActive surface implant is uniquely highly hydrophilic (water contact angle 0° compared to 139.9° for SLA) and enables reduced atmospheric contamination (hydrocarbons) on the implant surface.

Straumann Roxolid Implants

Relative to the conventional titanium implants, Roxolid is a homogenous metallic alloy composed of the elements titanium and zirconium. Roxolid is thus a new DNA material for dental implants. These two metallic alloy elements provides a higher tensile strength compared to pure titanium. The higher tensile strength thus enables small diameter implants to be placed with more confidence.

Benefits of Roxolid Implants

  • More confidence in small diameter implants due to high strength with excellent osseointegration for challenging anatomical situations and narrow interdental spaces
  • Flexibility of having more treatment options because Roxolid provides a wider choice of treatment options with small diameter implants allowing optimal treatment in specific clinical situation
  • Reduces invasiveness and grafting procedure due to its smaller size implants
  • Preserves vital structures and vascularization

Biomechanical tests for fatigue strength (i.e. the maximum force where an implant survives at least 5 million load cycles without any fractures) have been performed with Roxolid material according to the ISO 14 801 standard. Despite the small diameter, Roxolid implants have shown to be able to take higher fatigue strength compared with other main implants/abutment systems as in diagram below.
